OMG: Beyoncé Lip-Synched ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ At Obama’s Inauguration!!!

Well, I guess that it must be a slow time for news in America. After all we only have a Presidential Inauguration, the 40th Anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, the Debt Ceiling wrangling, the Gun Control debate etc. to distract us from the real news of the day: Beyoncé lip-synched the “The Star-Spangled Banner”!

I knew that something was up as soon as I saw the photo of Beyoncé singing (at left) shortly after her perfromance. That little thing hanging down form her left shoulder is not a new broach given her by Jay-Z.

And, no, it is not her iPod ear bud either but you are getting close.

That is an earpiece that performers use to monitor themselves during a live performance. Depending on how it is set up, through the earpiece the singer can hear their accompaniment and/or themselves as well as anything else that their sound engineer wants to run through it. Even James Taylor — who accompanied himself on acoustic guitar — wore the ear-piece to monitor his simple, solo performance.

Seeing Beyoncé’s dangling earpiece was a dead give away to me that this was not a “live” performance.

Now, a couple of days later we are still hearing about this as “Beyoncé-gate”! How ridiculous!

For one thing, talented professional singers like Beyoncé do not like to lip-sync unless they have to. In “live” concert situations lip-synching is very prevalent: it’s the Karaoke-ifying of “live” music!

According to news reports Beyoncé’s decision was made at the last-minute. I’m guessing that the decision was based on the poor acoustics of the set up rather than Beyoncé being in poor voice due illness. Performing live outdoors with the band in front of you is not the best situation for a singer.

Fortunately there was a Plan B in that both Beyoncé and the Marine Band had pre-recorded their performance “just in case”. Not an unusual precaution for such a high-stakes performance where perfection is expected.

Beyoncé looked exceptionally nervous during the introduction to “Star-Spangled Banner” but she sounded great and her performance was a stunner whether it was live or recorded.

I guess Beyoncé-gate is just another sign of sour grapes or a further attempt by some to nit-pick anything that might embarrass the Obama administration.

So let’s get back to the real news of the day: Michelle’s Bangs!
